Workflow Workflow essentially involves using an electronic system to automate the flow of work around a department, organisation or even between customers and suppliers. Workflow was originally thought of as an extension to document management, over time it became apparent that the advantages of workflow are often greater than of pure document management solutions. Workflow has grown in complexity, it is now possible to automatically forward any document containing a certain keyword to an individual. Multi-level workflow has also been a major development, i.e. the ability to have a document being sent to one individual and then automatically forwarded to another based on certain rules. These rules can often be completely flexible meaning that workflow can mirror the exact business rules and processes that an organisation has or wants to adhere to.
