In the early 1980s, document management solutions were essentially basic systems that captured paper documents by scanning them and storing them electronically for retrieval. Document management has progressed a great deal since this time. Workflow and the growth of the internet have been the main drivers behind the changing document management environment.

Document management has at times suffered bad press due to the excessive expectations of the paperless office. As time progresses, it becomes more apparent that the paperless office is not the main driver behind why customers purchase document management solutions and is not the key benefit to be gained.

Document management solutions are now advanced systems that automate document processing throughout an organisation, remove paper flow and reduce reliance on manual methods.
